ABOUT THE NEXT EDDY

what is “the next eddy”?

An eddy is a feature in the river (No, Eddy doesn’t work here!).  It is the current of water on the side of the river that is moving in the opposite direction of the main current.  It is the calm spot on the side: the pocket, the pullover and wait for your friends spot, the grab another beer and have some lunch spot, the there’s got to be a fish in there spot.  We are always moving towards that next eddy, in life and on the river.  The Next Eddy is the destination.

We are a full service fly shop and guide operation in downtown Salida, Colorado.  What does full service shop mean?  We can help you out in any aspect of fly fishing.  We sell and rent the gear you need for a day on the river and we help you out with the gear you already have.  We pride ourselves in having the friendliest guides and staff.  There is a lot to learn when you are beginning to fly fish, and let’s be honest, throughout a lifetime of fly fishing!  We want to help create a community of anglers.  We don’t want anyone to feel intimidated for asking what we all had to learn at some point, so come in and ask!  Meet our staff and our guides, you’ll most likely recognize them the next time you’re out on the river.

We offer guided trips for all levels of experience, from beginners to seasoned anglers.  We offer walk and wade trips (from the bank) and float fishing as well.

We are local and spend every bit of free time on the river.  It is what we love and we’d love to help get you out there too!

Guided trips: Where We Fish

In 2014 the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission designated the upper Arkansas River as Gold Medal Water, doubling the amount of designated water in the state. In order to receive a Gold Medal listing, a body of water must consistently support a minimum trout standing stock of 60 pounds per acre, as well as consistently support a minimum average of 12 quality trout (trout larger than 14 inches) per acre. The designated Gold Medal waters of the Arkansas river span 102 miles from the confluence with the Lake Fork of the Arkansas River, near Leadville, to the Parkdale at the Highway 50 Bridge crossing above the Royal Gorge.

With mild winters, typically clear water flows, and an abundance of high alpine creeks and lakes, the Arkansas River Valley provides for an abundance of top notch, year round fishing opportunities.

We also offer guided trips on sections of the South Platte River and the Gunnison River.

Our pond trips are located on a private ranch in Salida, CO.
