The Gunnison River sits about an hour west of Salida and is know for it’s world class fly fishing opportunities. We typically target the Gunnison in the fall when large numbers of Kokanee Salmon migrate upstream from Blue Mesa Reservoir to spawn. The Kokanee themselves are a great fighting sport fish and are a blast to catch on a fly rod. As the Kokanee start to spawn, the resident trout on the Gunnison will gorge themselves on the eggs of the spawning salmon. Targeting large trout feeding behind the Kokanee is the main goal for this fall fly fishing adventure.
The South Platte River is located a little over an hours drive east of Salida. The ‘Dream Stream’ section in between Spinney and Eleven Mile Reservoirs is known for it’s large migratory trout entering the river from Eleven Mile Reservoir in the spring and fall. Large number of Kokanee Salmon also move into the river in the fall. As the Kokanee begin to spawn, sight fishing to large trout feeding on their eggs is the name of the game. This tail water is not an easy fishery by any means but can be extremely rewarding for the persistent angler.
